I am frequently asked, "What's the secret to effective keyword research?" Remember this:

  1. Certainly, keyword research is the most important thing to do starting off. The internet is such a huge market that, with the right terms, you can find a small niche that will allow your dreams to come true. This is not fairy tale stuff. The internet is the greatest opportunity that has ever been available to the average person.
  2. Absolutely, there is so much deception and confusion on the web that it is not your fault if you haven't yet reached the level of online success that you are seeking.
  3. Undoubtedly, almost anyone can succeed at online business, but it is made to appear so complex that almost everyone gives up.
  4. Definitely, if all this leaves you confused and afraid, take a deep breath and relax. We are about to blow away the smoke and take careful aim at your confusion and fear, but first...

.... I have some bad news for you :-(  Google does a lot of research and they have found that the average visitor to a website will return to it on average 7 times before buying anything even if your product or solution to their problem suits their needs exactly and your price is excellent.

Keep this information in mind no matter what kind of online business you eventually get into.

People just don't trust, but don't be afraid...

The good news is that there is an easy solution: email marketing. Visitors to sites are encouraged to leave their email addresses so they could be sent free stuff. The central idea here is that they are giving the website owner permission to visit them through their inbox! Done properly, this builds incredible trust very quickly.

This is a great way to get around the awful 7 visit barrier mentioned above.

Most websites have opt-in forms to get people to leave their email address in exchange for a freebie of some sort like a free ebook, report or video. Forms like this one are in common use. They worked for a while, but people quickly got tired of free reports, ebooks and so on.

The minute they see these little boxes, they scramble for the back button. A company named Leadpages changed the whole process.

They suggest that your freebie not be an ebook or report. Instead, they suggest a blueprint, resource or small set of digital tools that the average visitor might find useful. People want something useful and short.

People want instructions, how to and so on. The best example I have seen for something like this was a Youtube video on how to build a picnic table. The instructions were very good.

At the end, he asked people to swap their email address for a simple, 1 page PDF list of materials they would need to bring to the lumber yard to build their own picnic table. The idea worked great.

People want something simple like a plan, a blueprint or a simple list. This is what Leadpages teaches you how to do.

And now, for the real magic. Instead of a little plain, boring opt-in form like the one above, a company  named LeadPages introduced a whole new ball game. If you visited a winter vacation website, would you be more tempted to fill in a plain little form like the one above or the Leadpages example below?

Uh-huh, I thought so. Remember that all these squeeze pages open in a full screen representation like this.

The next example was created by someone who has a website dealing with comic books. Beautiful, isn't it?

The one below is one of their top performers that gets a really good click through rate.

Anything can be changed with a couple of mouse clicks. Background images, styles of boxes, which information is asked for and so on.

This one is my personal favorite and gives me a great CTR. Give it a moment to load the video. You can change the video to anything you like. Imagine a gardening site with flowers waving in the wind, an aircraft site with airplanes floating above the clouds or ... well.. you get the idea.

Most people are not aware of the 7 visitor phenomenon that Google found and it kills their dream of independence and freedom. They work and work to build a great site, they get traffic and little money comes in because they are not aware of and dealing with that 7 visit phenomenon.

Keyword research: It involves uncovering the words buyers use. It is the means by which you determine which pages to build on your site, what content those pages should contain and the results you can expect.

If you didn't do keyword research, you'd write content for your site with no subject to target. Maybe you think people going to your site on anxiety are looking for a cure for their anxiety when in actually, they are trying to find out if they suffer from anxiety.

Doing your keyword research properly, your efforts will be tightly focused on the subjects that really matter to your visitors. This will save you lots of wasted time and energy.

People go on the internet to get information. The searches could be on anything from looking for a natural cure for acne, tundra snow tires for small airplanes to Chihuahua clothes.

The job of the search engines is to match the visitor's query to the most relevant websites that match the search term. The engines have hundreds of things they watch for to judge how relevant your site is to a certain subject.

Your job as a website creator is to decide on your site's theme and make sure that everything you put on your site is highly relevant to the main theme. That's why you get such great results when you do a search online. The 10 sites on the first page of the results page are judged to be the most relevant to the search you did and, very often, you will find your answer in the top 2 or 3 site links.

Over time, the more your site seems to hold the solution for particular searches, the engines will send more and more traffic. Note: This traffic is free traffic and is called organic traffic.

DO NOT CONFUSE THIS FREE TRAFFIC WITH WHAT SOME GURUS WILL TRY TO CONVINCE YOU TO DO. BUY TRAFFIC, SELL ENOUGH TO COVER YOUR COSTS AND THERE YOU HAVE IT, "VOILA!" FREE TRAFFIC. This rarely works and can lose you a lot of money. Leave that "free" traffic for when you really know what you are doing. There is plenty of free, organic traffic to be had.

Starting off with high quality keyword research will result in an avalanche of visitors to your site which will come to be know as an authority site. "But I'm not an authority," you say.

Yes you are. If you know more about something than some other people, you are an authority. You can develop your site into an authority site.

Keyword Research Software

There are several excellent keyword research programs available that not only find the best keywords for you, but also perform a lot of analysis to help you assess which are the best phrases. One really useful function is one where they give you an idea of the commercial intent, the willingness to buy of the average visitor. The better programs also have extra functions to provide a lot more information that marketers need.

Two of the best available right now are Market Samurai and Micro Niche Finder. Both use Google as their data source. Both add layers of extra functions to make the keyword researchers' life easier.

If you sign up for Google webmaster tools (it's free), they also have an excellent keyword program you can use at no charge.

For example, both of the first programs allow you to filter the often lengthy lists of keywords they throw up to ensure that you focus your attention on the best ones. But they each go further and help you with all kinds of additional tasks that could otherwise take a long time to do.

One added function lets you immediately discover if domain names based on the keywords you've uncovered are available for immediate purchase.

The software I use the most is called "Brainstormer" and is one of the tools in the SBI! website building software that I use. These are some of the results I get.

Other functions that you can expect from such top-end programs as Micro Niche Finder and Market Samurai are analysis of Google's top rankings for the keyword and suggestions of products you can sell to monetize a page focused on it.

If you take the time to use premium keyword research tools properly, you will save yourself a lot of time and they might even stop you from building  a site that would never get much traffic even with your hardest efforts.

Starting off, however, the beginner need not buy any of this software. The Google keyword tool is free and offers plenty of information.

You start by entering a root word and the program will go off and find other search phrases that people have used that contain the root word or synonyms or derivations of it.

It is usually a good idea to start your research with a fairly broad root word and then narrow down later. For example, if you are looking for popular search terms in the acne niche, start out with the broadest keyword of all: acne. You'll find that there are lots of searches for sub-terms like 'acne treatment', 'acne medication' and so on. Those keywords are likely to still have large search numbers.

It isn't just the search numbers that are important. Experienced marketers know that while a root term like 'menopause' can have a huge number of people searching for it (currently over 32,000 searches per day worldwide), the chances of getting your web page into a high listing position with Google are remote because there are already over 10 million other pages that you'd be competing with.

Instead, a clever keyword researcher would look for what is known as 'long tail keywords' - one that still has a respectable daily or monthly search volume, but also has low competition.

In this example, 'menopause anxiety' has about 3,500 searches per month, but only 5,000 pages in competition - a far easier number to get a first page listing!

You might be scared by the 5000 pages of competition. Don't be. Most sites are garbage. Study carefully the information on these lessons and you will build a site that will easily beat that competition.
