Surviving heart patients often ask me, "Can insomnia raise the risk of heart attacks?"

First, heart failure is identified by failure of the heart to pump enough blood throughout the body while maintaining the correct blood pressure. This condition usually occurs because the heart muscle has become too hardened or too weak to function effectively.

What usually triggers a heart attack is called inflammation. There are many tiny rips in the blood vessels. Usually, this doesn't cause any problems, but when something comes along to trigger an infection in one of them, this might cause the damaged area to swell up like any other cut thus cutting off the flow of blood.

This may cause a heart attack or sometimes very painful conditions like blocked veins in the lungs or legs.

If you are getting only 4 or 5 hours of sleep at night, you are in partial sleep deprivation. Research shows that this can increase your risk of developing chronic inflammation and/or diabetes. When your risk of diabetes is increased, this, in turn, increases your risk of developing heart disease.

Over time, an increased inflammatory response damages not only the heart, but arteries in the brain and kidneys.

Can Insomnia Raise The Risk Of Heart Attacks?

Recent studies show a link between insomnia and a high rate of heart failure risk in subjects that participated in the research.

Symptoms of insomnia such as difficulty getting to sleep, having poor quality sleep and frequent waking are occurring in up to 73 percent of heart failure patients.

None of the subjects in the study had heart failure when they joined the study, which lasted about eleven years. Having three or more insomnia symptoms simultaneously was linked to a more than threefold increased risk of heart failure among the participants, compared with those having no insomnia symptoms, even after allowing for many factors that could affect the results.

So far, it is not entirely clear why the two are linked, but there are some indications of a biological cause. One theory is that because insomnia creates stress responses, those types of responses could have a negative effect on heart function
